What in the world have I gotten myself into? Here I was stepping into a tubular chamber, currently 230 degrees below zero, in nothing but my socks, slippers, and my underwear. (Go ahead, read that again.) As the chamber door closed behind me, nitrogen vapor began whizzing around me and the temperature continued to drop, eventually getting down to -256 degrees.
Why in the world would I voluntarily step into a tube that is colder than the dark side of the moon?
Short answer: Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy (Whole Body Cryotherapy in this case) is a 2-3 minute treatment that is rapidly increasing in popularity because of the benefits it offers our body. Whole Body Cryotherapy was started in the 1970’s in Japan when a doctor was looking for a quick, safe, and effective way to alleviate pain for his patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain. Over the last 40 years the treatment method has spread throughout the world.
From elite athletes like Lebron James, Floyd Mayweather, and Kobe Bryant to celebrities who are defying what it means to age like Daniel Craig (Bond, James Bond) and Jennifer Anniston*, most cryotherapy users swear by it.
This is not just another celebrity trend, or fad of the moment. Throughout the U.S. more and more who suffer from pains and chronic illnesses are flocking to cryotherapy as a preferred treatment method, and those who are consistently exercising are reaping the benefits of fast recovery as well.
How does it work?
The cold air in the chamber lowers your skin surface temperature from the normal body temperature down to 30 degrees within 30-45 seconds. This magic number of 30 degrees triggers your sympathetic nervous system (your "fight-or-flight" mechanism) and constricts the blood vessels of your extremities, sending warm blood to your core.
Here's the cool part:
The blood that is sent to your core is enriched with oxygen, vitamins, and nutrients, and when you step out of the chamber, this new enriched blood flows throughout your entire body along with a flood of endorphins. Your endorphins are essentially “feel-good” chemicals and most people feel the effects of these endorphins for 6-8 hours after each treatment.
This newly enriched blood triggers the replacement of damaged cells, and eliminates dead cells. In other words, your body is rejuvenated on a cellular level.
The major benefits of cryotherapy are:
Your brain has one job: to keep you alive. You are essentially tricking your brain into thinking that you are freezing! Sending warm blood from the extremities to your core is your body’s way of protecting your vital organs that are needed to keep you alive. In fact, your body is working so hard to protect you that you will burn anywhere from 500-800 calories in a single session.**

My Experience at A Better You Wellness
There are only a few places you can go in Indianapolis for cryotherapy. When I went to A Better You Wellness in Westfield, I knew I had to try this “cryo thing” I was seeing all over social media. I wasn’t sure what it would do for me, but I knew that my joints are almost always stiff and sore from weight training and playing basketball.
The effects were almost immediate. I stepped out of the chamber, put my clothes back on and headed out the door feeling like a million bucks. I even accidentally stole a pair of their socks. (Sorry guys, total accident!)
I felt completely refreshed from head to toe from just 3 minutes of Cryotherapy, and have since recommended it to just about anyone I talk to. So many of us are going through each day with nagging aches, pains, and soreness that can be taken care of with this short and exciting treatment.
I have since gone back multiple times and will continue to do so. As always, we have the hookup for you to try it too.
A Better You Wellness is allowing a limited number of IFM readers to try their first Cryotherapy session with a ridiculous 66% savings from the normal single session price of $45. They are giving you a full session for $15 because they know you will be back again once you’ve tried it. Grab your session below.
